Typically I am not an applique fan. I’m not sure if that has to do with a lack of patience (I want it NOW!!!!), dissatisfaction with the feel of fused applique pieces, or being frustrated by trying to remember which side of the fabric to fuse the freezer paper to (do I reverse the image or not?). Then I saw the Solstice block of the month designed by Fourth and Sixth Designs using Island Batik fabrics. What can I say, it spoke to me.
I have been working on the store sample and learned some things that are new to me, have been around for a while, but have definitely opened the door to doing more applique for me. These techniques include thread painting and glue basting. Following online tutorials I have learned just how easy and freeing these techniques are. To add the icing on the cake, the finished block doesn’t have that stiff feeling that you can get with fusible applique. I have become a fan.
We are still waiting for the bolts to arrive and expect the shipment any day. Complete kits will be available and can be preordered. The kit will include all of the fabric for the top and binding, pattern and a one day class session has been scheduled for Saturday, January 13th to get you started on the first block. More information will be available and blocks can be previewed during our Small Business Saturday event on November 25th.
