6th Day of Christmas Sweet Treats!

Posted on

On the 6th day of Christmas my true love said to me . . . please enjoy these lovely sweet treats! They are mouth-watering to behold, inspiring to work with, and a fat quarter will not become a body part.

The reality is that many of us question our ability to put colors together. Sometimes the easiest way to decide upon a color combination is to look for inspiration in the everyday things around us. Today we’ve put together 5 fat quarter bundles to spark your imagination and provide the opportunity to explore color based upon a theme of holiday sweet treats.

Our first offering could be explored over a holiday brunch. We call this group summer berry jam. These blues and purples provide intense juicy color, reminicent of concord grapes and blueberries, but we do not recommend trying to spread them on your scone in the morning.

To lighten up our holiday brunch we should do the healthy thing and add a bowl of delicious citrus salad. This brings back memories of my childhood when my grandmother would send grapefruit and oranges from Florida. I like to add pineapple and kiwi for a warm sunny mixture that reminds me of sunrise on a summer day.

After brunch it is time to go sledding. Flying downhill on your sled, the long trek back to the top, the sunny sky and wind nipping at your nose. Oh, to be a child again. After a brisk afternoon it is time to come in and warm up. Nothing is quite as heart-warming as a fresh hot bowl of steamed cranberry pudding. We made this Christmas treat once a year and it connected me to grandparents and great-grandparents that I never had the chance to know. To this day, seeing these rich browns, reds, and creams makes me feel warm and comforted.

Now that the afternoon activities  have settled down the discussion over dinner can commence. There are the usual requests and debates. Do we have turkey or roast beef? How about if we try something totally different and have Mushroom Wellington as a main course? But then the topic turns to the truly important decision — which tasty treat to choose for dessert. The choices have been narrowed down to two.

We can have Tuxedo Pie (and pretend that we are really classy) or indulge in a holiday favorite and have a generous bowl of peppermint stick ice cream.
