The Fabric Shop Network is sponsoring another fun event coming up in March! Worldwide Quilting Day is Saturday, March 16, and it is held as a day of celebration for all things quilting. In conjunction with Worldwide Quilting Day this year, the Fabric Shop Network has posed a challenge for quilters around the world: can our customers or group (we’re going with “Team Quilter’s Compass”) make enough strip quilts between March 16 and March 23 to climb one of the 7 Summits with fabric?
Challenge accepted! That’s right, we will be participating in the 7 Summits Strip Quilt Challenge and we want you to join us!
Let us explain – Mt. Everest is the tallest peak in the world. It stands 29,029 feet tall (348,348 inches). That is equivalent to 218 Jelly Roll 1600 quilts (also known as Strip Quilts or Jelly Roll Race Quilts). It would take 152 Jelly Roll Quilts to climb Mt. McKinley. While The Matterhorn isn’t one of the 7 Summits, we think it’s beautiful (and SWISS!), so that’s what we’re aiming for. The Matterhorn is 14,692 feet tall (176,304 inches), which comes out to 110 strip quilts.
So how are we participating? Starting Saturday, March 16 and lasting through Saturday, March 23, Quilter’s Compass will open up our classroom for you to come make strip quilt tops. These won’t be timed races. The goal is to make as many tops as we can during that week. You’ll end the challenge with one (or two, or ten!) strip quilt tops. Make one for everyone in your family! Or you can donate it to a worthy cause that we have not yet determined. The Fabric Shop Network is awarding bragging rights to different “teams” based on how tall of a peak they can climb. We, personally, just think it sounds like fun!
We think this event will be more fun with more participants, so we’re offering you some incentives!
1) Buy the only two supplies you’ll need for this challenge (a jelly roll or strip pack of some type and a spool of thread) together at Quilter’s Compass and receive a 10% discount. This discount will also be available for our online customers who can’t make it into the store to sew with us!
2) If you want to cut your own strips from your stash, bring in your fabric and learn how to use the Sizzix cutting system to cut 2.5″ strips for free!
3) Prizes will be awarded to individuals who make the most tops, so bring your A-game!
We’ll set up a schedule with 3-hour time slots so we can make sure you don’t show up to a full classroom! We’ll reserve your tablespace and if you want to get right down to sewing, you can always sew your strips end-to-end a day or two ahead of time!
We’re really excited about this event and hope you’ll join us for a fun-filled week!
