Wow, it has been a very long time since we’ve shared on our blog – our apologies! We’ve had so much going on at the shop over the last few months, but we won’t sit and make excuses. Let’s get right into today’s blog post!
The Gift of Confidence (from Barb!)
Fall has passed and Winter is fast approaching as evidenced by the cooler forecasts and the tiny amount of snow we received last weekend. It’s that time again; time to plan for the holidays and the gift-giving that goes along with the season. I have received many wonderful gifts over the years. Some were small, some large. Some expensive and some not. Sometimes the gift can be totally unexpected and intangible. I find that those are usually the best.
My husband has given me some of the greatest gifts that anyone could ever give to someone they care about. None came wrapped, nor appropriately timed. There were no cards attached. It wasn’t for Christmas, a birthday, anniversary, Mother’s Day, or any specific occasion. He even tried many times to give me the same thing over again. All too often and for many years I declined to accept, but over time I have come to value him and the gifts he has given me above just about anything else.
You see, he gave me the acknowledgement that I could do just about anything that I set my mind to and the confidence to move forward and execute my plans. He took the confidence in my sewing ability that had been fostered by my mom and he liberally applied the necessary fertilizer to really let it bloom. So, here we are. Not only do I have the confidence to tackle just about anything with a reasonable expectation of success, but knowing that I can do it makes me believe that anyone can if they are willing to be patient and put in the effort. Personally, I think it’s just about the greatest gift ever no matter if you are the gift giver or the receiver!
So what is the point, you ask? Well, I was taught to share and being that it is the gift-giving season, I would like to share the confidence. All too often we have listened to customers say “I’m not good at picking colors” or “I only sew squares because triangles are too hard” or “Curved seams look really difficult.” To those statements I will invoke the “20-Mile-Away-Galloping-Horse-in-Driving-Rain-at-Midnight” rule. In other words, if you can’t see any potential inconsistency or misalignment under those conditions, then clearly (ha ha) it doesn’t matter! To swipe Nike’s expression – just do it. I know you can, because if I can then it just can’t be that difficult!
So this holiday season, as you bestow gifts upon friends, family members, neighbors, coworkers, and perhaps strangers, too, just remember that while the gift they hold in their hands is nice, the intangible gifts are usually the most enjoyable – confidence, laughter, memories, and love are just a few that come to mind.
Merry Christmas to you all. We hope you all receive some of life’s greatest gifts this season and if you don’t receive a boxful of confidence under the tree, just stop into the shop and we’ll help you out 🙂
